4 Amazing Uses for Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap

It may drive my family crazy, but I'm a bit of a neat freak. I'm just happier when our space is organized and clean (no small job with three kids running around).

As much as I love clean, I'm really disturbed by conventional cleaners. I don't really know exactly what happens when they absorb into my skin. I can't be completely sure of the impact to our lungs when we're breathing them in. Having a cupboard full of skull and cross bones cleaning agents that I'd be terrified of my toddler getting her hands on just doesn't sit right with me.

So I don't use them.

Instead, I look for cleaners without chemical ingredients. Usually what I find are multi-purpose cleaners that:

-end up being a fraction of the cost of conventional cleaners,
-do more jobs,
-smell significantly better, and
-don't threaten to hurt my kids if they come into contact with them.

The one product that's quickly become our staple for every possible job is Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile Soap. It's completely biodegradable, packaged with 100% post-consumer recycled bottles, made with certified fair trade and organic oils, and CONTAINS NO HARSH CHEMICALS! So you don't have to worry about them on your skin, OR around your kids!

It's available in Almond, Citrus, Eucalyptus, Peppermint (one of our top favourites), Lavender, Tea tree, and Rose, and true to their claims it really is a heroic multi-tasking cleaning agent.

Here are my TOP 4 USES for Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap:

1. Window Cleaner:

Why would you ditch Windex if it works?
Because ammonia cleaners don't exactly make the grade when it comes to our health (Want to know what grade Windex gets from the Environmental Working Group?)
Because chemicals like ammonia end up somewhere, even if you never end up seeing exactly where.
Because there's a better, cheaper, healthier option!

To wash windows with Dr Bronner's Castile Soap, simply:

Reuse a spray bottle
Pour 1 Tbsp of Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile Soap into bottle
Fill rest of bottle with water
Swish, and it's ready to use.

Use a cloth (something you can wash and reuse, as opposed to disposable paper towels) to clean windows and mirrors, and if you are strongly opposed to seeing streaks, just grab a clean towel to wipe the surface until all streaks are gone. We find re-purposing old, thin towels works perfectly.

2. In the bathroom.

Reuse a spray bottle
Pour 1 1/2 Tbsp of Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile Soap into bottle
Fill rest of bottle with water
Swish, and it's ready to use

Anybody who's developed a reliance on abrasive powder cleaners can get their fix by using a double-sided sponge, with a nice scratchy green side for tough spots, but I use this effectively on every surface in the bathroom: sink, countertops, toilet, shower, floors, and even on the walls.

3. Mouthwash

Admittedly, I'm not a hard core mouthwash user, but I am a coffee drinker and it's nice to have something on hand to freshen breath when it's needed.

Pour 1/2 teaspoon of Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Liquid Castile Soap and 3/4 cup of water into a reusable container

Use just as you would regular mouthwash (I usually also flush my mouth with water afterwards to avoid feeling like there's any soapy residue in my mouth).

4. Hand Soap

Reuse a soap dispenser
Pour 1 Teaspoon of Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile Soap into bottle
Fill rest of bottle with water

Swish and you've got an all natural hand soap that cuts through grease (great to have by the kitchen sink), dirt, and makeup.

*If you want a Hand Scrub with super powers:

Mix equal parts Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castile Soap and sugar (I use the peppermint soap and brown sugar).
Voila! All natural hand scrub that will take on literally any gritty job you give it.

We've tried and tested NUMEROUS natural cleaners, but Dr. Bronner's has become our 'go-to'.

You cannot beat the price.

At our closest grocery store 32 oz. is $16.49.
In our home, breaking it down for multiple uses
32oz becomes approximately 80 different 'products'.
That's roughly .21 cents per product.

If I were to look at the price and compare it to a single bottle of some other conventional cleaner it wouldn't make sense, but I know that what we're getting for $16.49 is completely untouchable in a conventional cleaner: a multi-purpose, high quality, safe, healthy, incredibly inexpensive and yet equitable product.
