What's Wrong With No Makeup Selfies?

No makeup selfies are EVERYWHERE. Pictures of women without makeup are plastered all over Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

It’s to support Kim Novak.
It’s to raise money for cancer.
It’s just another marketing campaign for Dove.

Whoever started it, whatever the motivations involved, I can appreciate the idea that women should feel good about themselves the way they are, BUT there’s something about this no makeup selfie thing that's a little more insidious than that.

Makeup or no makeup this trend underscores that beautiful is something women are supposed to be, something we're supposed to care about, and something we're expected to put on show to give other people a way to value us.
